A HISTORIC collection of tools which is largely inaccessible to the public is to go on show in buildings to be renovated at a cost of almost £600,000.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has put up the money for renovation of derelict buildings at the Kelham Island industrial museum in Sheffield.

They will be used to house the Hawley Collection, which was brought together by Sheffield tool merchant Ken Hawley who recognised that many of the industrial techniques used in Sheffield metal working industries were fast disappearing.

The collection, which is regarded as internationally important, is housed at Sheffield University but public access is restricted.

Now Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust has been given £595,000 to renovate buildings at Kelham Island to provide a permanent home for the collection.

The buildings form part of the former Russell Works, where tools were manufactured.

The museum was badly affected by last year’s floods and is closed to the public during restoration.

Among the unusual artefacts in the Hawley Collection are a special hammer used to flatten saw blades, using a combination of 300 strikes at different angles, a device to cut the teeth into file blades and the world’s first steel tape measure.

Exhibits also chart the history of the Stanley knife.

Aside from tools, Mr Hawley also amassed a large collection of trade catalogues and gathered film footage of the tools in use.

Fiona Spiers, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Few people realise that Sheffield was not only a major producer of steel but also of tools used to shape the environment around us.

“Our latest grant will reveal the story of this intriguing industry captured by the Hawley Collection and add a new dimension to the wealth of industrial heritage at Kelham Island Museum.”

The project to provide a museum for The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles received £193,500 yesterday from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Guild, which has the largest collection of quilts and related artefacts in the UK, has relocated its national headquarters and heritage collection from Halifax. Its president, Janice Gunner, said: “This award from the Heritage Lottery Fund comes at an important time in the development of our new museum in York.

“The award, together with the enhanced facilities in St Anthony’s Hall, will enable us to deliver a more comprehensive and sustained education programme relating to our Heritage Collection.”

A LOCAL singing group is celebrating after being awarded a grant to the tune of thousands of pounds to help with their centenary celebrations.

The Sleights Singers has been given £3,436 by The National Lottery Awards for All programme which they will use to mark their 100-year anniversary.

The 100-year fund was kick-started last year by a £175 donation from the Whitby Gazette’s Pride of Whitby Awards

The choir is planning to celebrate with a number of events, including two public concerts. The first on 18 July will be held in Sleights Village Hall where local school children and guest soloists will join the group for their annual performance.

Money from the grant will be used to buy new music and uniforms for the event.

The second performance is at Whitby Coliseum – the venue for the group’s first public appearance in 1909.

Ernie Marsden, conductor of the group since 1985 said the extra funding from the grant would help them mark the occasion accordingly.

“We’re absolutely delighted to get a grant from Awards for All as we were really walking a tightrope. The evening would be quite different without the funding,” he said.

“Not many choirs in the region can claim such longevity and it needs to be celebrated. Choirs come and go, and while our numbers have dropped to around 25 this is nevertheless quite an acheivement.”

Money raised from the concerts and any funds left over will be donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The group have a tradition of raising money for charity and are keen to continue their fund-raising. Mr Marsden said: “One hundred years ago a choral group was formed to compete in the Eskdale Tournament of Song the followin
g year. Since then it has performed in countless concerts and has raised quite a lot of money for a variety of charities.

“I took over as conductor in 1985 and we have given more than 300 concerts and raised a considerable sum for good causes. We intend to continue that tradition this year.”

The Awards for All scheme allocates funding to grass roots community groups and voluntary organisations. Vanessa White, head of the Big Lottery Fund for the Yorkshire and Humber region said: “It is fantastic to see community groups such as Sleights Singers are still going strong after 100 years. Their efforts for charity are to be commended and Awards For All is delighted to help them mark an important occasion for the village.”

Should the concerts be a success, the group hopes to raise £400 for charity. They will also donate any money left over from the cost of staging the planned events.

He said the windows are mainly clear glass and have not been attended to since they were put up in the 1850s, when the church was built.

The other job to be done is to improve the collection of water running off the church roof.

“The hoppers and drains are all too small and our current architect, Reg Ellis of Chipping Campden, has designed large receptacles, hoppers, drains and gutters at the back end of the roof,” said Mr Thurburn-Huelin.

The church will receive the lottery grant in two stages, one of £5,000 towards the initial work and fees and £22,000 towards the work itself.

The total cost of the work is estimated to be about £50,000, some of which was raised at a marathon Bible reading last September, which made £15,500.

Parishioners in nearby Honington have also given £4,000 to the building’s restoration.

The church has previously received an Awards for All lottery grant of £4,500 for a new switching mechanism to make more efficient use of its boiler.

Its medieval tower also had restoration work carried out on it following a fundraising campaign.

ABERLADY’S ancient past is to be further explored by local history buffs – following a fantastic £50,000 boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

A mix of community volunteers and professional historians will undertake an in-depth archaeological survey, organised by Aberlady Conservation Society, targeting three historic sites in and around Aberlady next month.

Among the sites earmarked for investigation during the three-month project include ‘Smugglers’ Cave’ – the entrance to which was discovered on the shore, near to the former medieval harbour, by society members two years ago, and which is believed to be located underneath an early Iron Age fort.

The massive project will also focus on investigating the Glebe area between Aberlady Bay and the village kirk, and examining the origins and construction of the medieval harbour.

Society secretary and project manager, Ian Malcolm, explained that the coastal village, the official port of Haddington until the 19th century, was clearly a key settlement in Scotland during the Dark Ages.

He said: “To this day, Aberlady has surrendered the largest concentration of stray Anglo-Saxon finds than any other site in Scotland. This project is a real voyage of discovery and we are delighted by this award.

“It will enable our great heritage to be better understood and celebrated by both the community and visitors.”

The group also plans to uncover the village’s links with the early Christian church, following research which confirmed the presence of various iconography in the area following the withdrawal of Roman forces from their northern frontier.

“For example, we know that an early Christian high cross, standing nearly 20 feet high and elaborately carved with Celtic and Mediterranean symbols, stood here (in Aberlady),” said Mr Malcolm.

“This bears testimony to the great changes taking place and the important place of Aberlady within them.”

The surveys are supported by the National Museums of Scotland, East Lothian Council and the British Library.

One long-term goal of members is to use the results of the project to create learning packs for school children at Aberlady Primary School.

A MAN has found a $25,000 winning lottery ticket, more than six years after it was given to him as a gift - and only months before it was to expire.

The man from Bundaberg, Queensland, would not be identified but said he was given a $1 Instant Scratch-Its ticket by a friend who had borrowed a box of Allen keys from him about six-and-a-half years ago.

The friend had put the ticket in the box to say thank you - but the man didn’t discover it until last week - just months before the prize would have been invalid for payment.

The man had only reached for the Allen keys because his water pump had broken down.

“The funny thing is, I almost wasn’t going to look for the box of keys, but something made me change my mind,” he said.

Then, when the man found the ticket, he almost didn’t bother scratching it.

“At first I didn’t put much effort into it and let it fall on the floor,” he said.

“But when I was cleaning up I picked the ticket up again and tried to scratch it properly.”

The man scratched three matching values of $25,000, and said he couldn’t believe his eyes.

In another stroke of luck, Queensland Instant Scratch-Its prizes are payable for seven years after the ticket has been released, meaning his ticket was valid for another six months.

The period of time instant tickets are valid varies from state to state.
